While the official name is the M41 SSR MAV/AW, that isn't going to catch people's attention like "rocket launcher" is. While using one will probably get you cursed at over Xbox Live, and possibly branded a "rocket mama" (MC Frontalot WHATTUP), they're extremely destructive and will easily turn the tide of battle in your favor.

The rocket launcher is possibly the most popular FPS weapon of all time, going all the way back to Doom and possibly earlier. In Halo 3, the rocket launcher is one of the most powerful weapons you can wield and is extremely easy to use, provided you don't blow yourself up.

The launcher holds six rockets at a time and requires you to reload after firing two shots. A direct hit is instant death but as long as you hit remotely close to your target, the splash damage will usually do them in. It will also destroy most vehicles in one hit, with the exceptions of the Scorpion Tank and the Wraith. The launcher has a 2x scope, making it moderately accurate.

The rocket launcher also has its fair share of weaknesses. It reloads slowly and ammunition is not easy to come by. Because of its destructive capability, it can be deadly in the wrong hands, not only to the user but to the user's teammates as well.

The rockets travel at slow speeds, making them fairly easy to dodge. They can also be deflected with the gravity hammer, though pulling this off is difficult.

It is possible to shoot oncoming rockets and detonate them in mid-air.

If you watch a player fire a rocket, it actually comes out of their forehead.
