The sniper rifle has been a staple of first person shooters for years now. It plays a dual role in competitive gaming. It's a Godsend in the hand of a steady, skilled marksman. It's also a complete pain in the ass to frantic, inaccurate players like myself. Seriously, why am I so bad with it?
Read about the sniper rifle after the break.
The full name of the rifle in Halo 3 is the Sniper Rifle System 99D-S2 Anti-Matériel. I am go insane if I had to recite all of that on a regular basis.
The sniper rifle is favored by many players for a reason. Its intense power will kill a fully-shielded opponent instantly with a shot to the head. It's also been known to kill players in one shot to the chest or groin. Even ricochet shots do a good amount of damage with a ricochet shot, which you can see in this infamous video where some poor guy shoots himself in the head through a series of complex ricochets.
Of course the other major advantage of the sniper rifle is its unrivaled accuracy, which will allow you to pick off a target from across the map or even shoot a rocket in mid-air, causing it to explode. This is near impossible to do, however, unless the rocket is fired directly at you. Even then it's a rarity.
While the sniper rifle isn't the best close range weapon, it can still be surprisingly effective in the right hands. Those skilled at "no scoping" - firing the rifle without zooming in - can do quite a bit of damage in close quarters combat.
The sniper rifle is not perfect, however. Easily its biggest flaw is the commotion it makes when fired. The loud noise and the bullet trail will instantly give away your position to enemies and, even worse, enemy snipers. Because of this, you should be sure to land a killshot on your target.
